In Seattle, and throughout Alaska and Hawaii, Northland offers a wide variety of freight and transportation services. We rely on our fleet of forklifts, cranes, loaders, trucks, tractors, chassis, as well as thousands of dry and refrigerated containers and shipping platforms to help move your goods.
Northland’s unique capabilities center around our common carrier tug and barge service – a shallow draft format that provides tremendous flexibility when navigating in coastal waters and into ports with limited infrastructure. We have year-round service to Southeast and Central Alaska as well as Hawaii, and seasonal service to Western Alaska ports and villages.
One of Northland’s core competencies is the transportation, loading, and discharge of construction project-related cargoes. Often, the destinations for such cargoes are remote, unimproved sites, lacking port facilities or adequate shore access.
Northland moves full barge-loads of freight on a charter basis when equipment availability and economic feasibility permit. Some of the destinations we have hauled charter cargo to include Sakhalin Island, Anadyr, Russia, and Tomakomai, Japan.
Northland handles every type of cargo, from general containerized freight to specialized machinery. We have been able to continuously improve our stevedoring systems to help achieve higher productivity, shorter vessel turn times, and damage-free handling. This expertise comes from processing close to a million tons of containerized, breakbulk, bulk liquid and roll-on/roll-off cargo annually. Some of our notable stevedoring customers include Crowley Marine, Alaska Railbelt Marine, and Bowhead Transportation.
In addition to receiving full container and platform loads, Northland provides less-than-containerload (LCL) and freight consolidation services. For customers who require a central receiving location for merchandise from different vendors, this has proven to be an invaluable service.
We provide both freeze and chill container service to Southeast Alaska ports and select Western Alaska destinations.
We offer the expertise and equipment necessary to guarantee movement of oversize and special cargoes safely and efficiently. We routinely ship everything from fishing boats and pre-manufactured housing to oil field modules and mining equipment. Please contact a Northland Customer Service Representative to discuss your cargo’s special handling needs.
Our trained experts stay current with the various regulations affecting the transportation of hazardous cargo. Northland is prepared to move most types of hazardous materials allowable by the United States Coast Guard and local Fire Departments. Hazardous material shipments must be booked in advance of shipment. Please contact a Northland Customer Service Representative for assistance and information.
